How to choose a masonry contractor in Chicago

Masonry repairs are costly and hard to undo. A few checks before you hire can save you from paying twice.

Check the license

The City of Chicago says a licensed mason contractor is generally required for most masonry work, with some exceptions such as repairs that do not need a building permit. Ask the contractor for their license and check it with the city.

Ask for proof of insurance

Ask for a certificate of insurance. If a worker is hurt or something is damaged, you want it covered by the contractor’s policy, not yours.

Get a written estimate

A clear written estimate shows what is included and what is not. See what it should contain.
