DIY tuckpointing or hire a mason?

Tuckpointing looks simple on video. For a very small repair it can be. Here is where DIY works and where it costs you more than it saves.

When DIY can work

  • A few isolated joints at ground level
  • Hairline surface cracks, not structural problems
  • Modern, hard brick where color matching is not a concern

What goes wrong

  • Grinding out old mortar can chip or cut the edges of the bricks.
  • Mortar that is harder than old brick can crack the brick instead of the joint.
  • Mismatched color or patchy joints stand out.
  • Working on a ladder is a real danger.

When to call a mason

  • Mortar is failing across a whole wall or above the first floor
  • Bricks are cracked, loose, bulging or leaning
  • Old or historic brick that needs matched mortar
  • Water is getting into the building

Frequently asked questions

Is DIY tuckpointing cheaper?

For a small repair, tools and materials can cost less than hiring a pro. But mistakes can turn a small repair into a bigger one.

Can I fix just a few joints myself?

If there are only a few, they are easy to reach and the brick is in good shape, it can be done carefully. If the joints keep failing, there is usually a bigger problem behind it.
